A 3rd giant is going to join the two famous giants of Memnon, on the site of the funerary temple of Amenophis III, on the west bank of the Nile, at Luxor. The statue to been discovered about hundred metres behind the two previous ones; it was part of those originally decorating the temple and which, as the others, was brought down by an earthquake, before the temple acted as a source of stone. The statue is very damaged after its prolonged contact with water and mud.
The set of the three giants only give a very vague idea of splendour which the monument had originally.
The news seems to interest the Spanish press only...

KV64 and University of Basel Kings Valley Project

On the excellent blog of Jane Akshar, can be found a summary of the conference given at Luxor by Suzanne Bickel in the setting of the project of the University of Basel, relative to the Valley of the Kings. Before speaking of the newly discovered KV64, the speaker recalled the ten uninscribed tombs of the Valley of the Kings, a topic very rarely treated.

Animal Mummies Discovered at Ancient Egyptian Site

The Canadian mission (Toronto) of the North Abydos Votive Zone Project (NAVZP) works on the site of Abydos, more particularly at a place of little inviting aspect, but which still conceals however archaeological treasures, known under the name of the "Terrace of the big god" (see left photo). The team discovered, during last summer, a cache of more than 80 mummified animals in a large building, probably a temple, whose origin would go back to the reign of Sethy I (XIXth Dynasty). Most animals (but not all) are dogs, probably related to the god Wepwawet, "Opener of the Way", who was the tutelary god of Abydos before being replaced by Osiris. The animals have been sacrificed, and researchers are hoping to find a tomb in the neighbourhood.
In another room, a royal statue in wood, strongly damaged, could represent queen Hatshepsut (without any guarantees).
Two tombs, one of which is arched, has also been recovered. One of them belongs to a priest of which the name, incompletely preserved, includes the name Isis. It came with many ushabti in earthenware and clay.

2nd phase of Khufu solar boat project to begin Monday

The ministry of antiques has just announced that the second phase of restoration of the second solar barque of Kheops has just started. This barque, the twin of the one on view for years in the museum of the barque, close to the great pyramid, should also be put on display. The team had also found that water had leaked from the nearby museum housing the first solar boat. The leak, they noted, had adversely affected some of the boat's wood, making it necessary to quickly wrap up the analysis phase and restore the water-damaged wood.

A small team of the Dutch mission of Saqqara returned to its site of excavation in order to make an assessment of damages ascribed to the tombs by the revolution. They first had the sadness to see their house of excavation reduced to the state of almost ruin. On the other hand, they were pleasantly surprised to see that the tombs only underwent little damage. Some stores, on the other hand, have been sacked, notably the Maya E (see photo left).
The tombs of the New Kingdom have been reopened to tourists.

 Dahabeya for sale

The Karnak Cachette Project / Cachette de Karnak

Still on the blog of Jane Akshar, is a summary of the conference given at Luxor by Laurent Coulon, of the IFAO. One learns there notably that the base of data on the objects from the hiding place of Karnak is going to pass to its version 3. This will permit deeper research. For example: all priests of a givzn divinity, all those of a given name ...

Snappy new museum for Kom Ombo / entre crainte et vénération

The museum of the crocodile has just opened on the site of Kom Ombo. Remember that the half of the homonymous temple is dedicated to the crocodile god Sobek, head of the region (and of the Fayum). The habits of the animal, its speed, its strength contributed to make of the crocodile Sobek one of the most important divinities of the pantheon. Customs of the crocodile are the inverse of those of the people: it rests in the day and regains the river at night; it can be seen reappearing at dawn, its favourite hunting period. It has been assimilated thus to Re, whilst, as for all dangerous divinities, one gave back to him a cult destined to pacify (as Sekhmet), where more precisely to canalise his strength on the enemies of the sun and Egypt. So, he played a great role in relation to the army. It is recommended that you read the article of Mohamed el Bialy, also translated below in French, in the F2 reference).
As for the museum itself, it seems that it is especially dedicated to show mummies of crocodiles; we await to see if people want to announce to us their experience, to pronounce on their interest of the visit.

Dommage.
